Give whatever you can according to what you have. If you are really eager to give, it is an important how much are able to give. God wants you to give what you have, not what you don't have. Of course, I don't mean you should give so much that you suffer from having too little. I only mean that there should be some equality. Right now you have plenty and can help them. Then at some other time they can share with you when you need it. In this way, everyone's needs will be met. Do you remember what the Scriptures say about this? "Those who gathered a lot had nothing left over, and those who gathered only a little had enough".

2 Corinthians 8

I try to remember this when I'm tithing. Lots of people like to say 10% of everything you have should be given to the Lord. But I feel that by putting a number on what you are "offering" it turns your gift into more of a business transaction and less of a form of worship. I know that it was a requirement in the Old Testament. However, there were a lot of things that were done in the Old Testament simply because the people were disobedient. Allowing people to divorce is one example. If God hadn't told them how much to give many would just give 1%.

I usually give around 10% to Lord, but if there is something important I try to remember that the whole point of tithing is to show that everything we have is the Lord's. By tithing we're saying, "thank you for what you've blessed me with". If you don't know this by now - you will soon learn it; money comes and goes in life. You can try to save it, or you can spend it, doesn't seem to make any difference; in the end its always gone. So when we have the chance, we might as well put it to use for God's kingdom and receive a blessing for it.
