Because we have these promises, dear friends, lets us cleanse ourselves from everything that can defile our body or spirit. And let us work toward complete purity because we fear God.
2 Corinthians 6-7
That last part got me. In our world we do lots of things because we fear. For instance, I don't press my non-Christian friends about Christ because I fear they won't like me. Some people don't steal because they fear getting thrown in jail. We don't start dancing and singing in a crowd because we fear what others may think. Pick something - anything! Every day there are hundreds of things we do because of fear. But what about fear of the Lord? How often do you make a decision because you have the fear of the Lord in you?
The Bible says:

They themselves will be wealthy,

Psalm 112:1-4

Don't be afraid of those who want to kill you. They can only kill your body; they cannot touch your soul. Fear only God, who can destroy both soul and body in hell. Not even a sparrow, were only half a penny, can fall to the ground without your father knowing. And the very hairs on your head are numbered. So don't be afraid; you are more valuable to him that whole flock of sparrows.
Matthew 10:28-31

1 Peter 1:17-19

Acts 9:31
We never forget that our God is a God of love. But sometimes we forget that he is also the Awesome Almighty Creator of the Universe. He has dealt awesome judgment just as much as he has given out love. He isn't a loving, squishy, feel-good Barney god, OR a god of death and hatred like Allah. He is a perfect, just and loving God. And as God's word says, "Fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge. Only fools despise wisdom and discipline." (Proverbs 1:7).
As Almighty God he deserves our reference more than anyone, or anything, else.
