Quote:
Now, dear brothers and sisters,*I appeal to you by the authority of the Lord Jesus Christ to stop arguing among yourselves. Let there be real harmony so there won't be divisions in the church. I plead with you to be of one mine, united in thought and purpose. For some members of Chloe's household have told me about your arguments, dear brothers and sisters. Some of you are saying," I am a follower of Paul." Others are saying, " I follow Apollo's," or " I follow Peter,*" or " I follow only Christ." Can Christ really be divided into pieces?
Was I, Paul, crucified for you? Where any view baptized in the name of Paul? I think God that I did not baptized any of you except Crispus and Gaius, for now no one can say they were baptized in my name.
- 1 Corinthians 1:10-15
We see this everywhere in today's society, are you a Baptist? or Pentecostal? maybe a Catholic? All these different types of congregations were started so that the congregation could make sure that the people that attended their church followed and believed what they did. Each church has written up a statement of faith for all the members to sign so that they can make sure they all believe the same. However, that sounds to me like they're just reinventing the wheel. Didn't God already outline everything in the Bible? How could someone possibly write a better statement of faith than the Bible?
Over my life I've been involved in many different churches, as a matter of fact, I don't remember staying in one church for more than two years. But to tell the truth, I don't think it's right to say "we believe this way", or "we believe that way...". All I care about is, "Do you believe God's Way? Do you follow God's word?". Contrary to popular belief, there isn't 1001 ways to interpret the Bible - there is only one! You can misinterpret it, or maybe God hasn't shown you something yet, but in the end there's only one true way to interpret the Bible - God's Way. Signing a statement of faith isn't the way to learn it, instead, you should read God's word and meditate on it.
Like Paul said,"I plead with you to be of one mine, united in thought and purpose." Every church has a membership, but I'll tell you - I was a member the moment I excepted Christ into my life. I am a Christian, that is my membership. It doesn't matter what church you come from, just follow God's word.
